Does Pepper Spray Expire?

Pepper spray does not last forever. On most pepper sprays, there is an expiration date marked on the product. Depending on the brand, this is usually between 2-4 years from the manufacture date. It is advisable to change it every year or every two years (depending on the size) to make sure that it still works in an effective and efficient manner.

This is not due to the OC ingredient itself, it relates to the fact that most aerosol products lose pressure over time. If the aerosol propellant leaks out, you may not be able to use the canister-you may not be able to actually spray it.

Due to that, it is important to take note of the expiration date. As pepper spray is generally used only in a time of emergency, it is good practice to test it every 3-6 months to ensure it works perfectly and will work should you ever need to use it.

Press the spray in a safe environment, outside - avoid the breeze. Store it at room temperature. Avoid direct sunlight.

Remember, the reason you carry pepper spray is to protect yourself so please check expiration dates to avoid carrying a spray that may not work so well when you need it the most.
